John Alexander (Sandy) Bell died in Wellington after a lengthy illness last weekend. Sandy joined the RNZN as a Cadet (E) in 1952 and trained as an Engineering Officer and as a Constructor Officer. He completed his uniformed service in 1962 and continued to serve as a civilian until retirement in 1994. As the Director of Naval Construction he made major inputs into build of HMNZS Endeavour and the ANZAC ship project.
 
Sandy's funeral will be at The Lychgate, Johnsonville  at 1400, Thursday, 25 February
