River Plate battle honoured at Navy graduation |

New Navy junior officers and sailors are today's custodians of the
values that distinguished New Zealand sailors fighting in the Battle of
the River Plate, Defence Minister Wayne Mapp told a graduation parade at
the Devonport Naval Base in Auckland today.
Sunday is the 70th anniversary of the famous battle in
which the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee was engaged and
defeated in Argentina's River Plate estuary by a Royal Navy cruiser
squadron including HMS Achilles. Achilles was then part of the New
Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, forerunner of the Royal New Zealand
Navy. Over half her crew were New Zealanders.
