Did you know?
Cadre - a term for a skeleton military unit but keeps its structure of officers and senior ratings. It can be then quickly expanded with drafts of mobilised men or replacements. Came into use on the Western Front when battalions would leave a cadre behind when they went into action. The word come the French for 'frame' which has its origins in the Latin quadrum or square.
Mention in Dispatches - this a commendation for outstanding service, but not such that would qualify the officer or rating for the award of a decoration or medal.
