GAMBIA had been laid down in 1939, in the yard of Swan Hunter & Wignam Richardson at Wallsend on Tyne and was first commissioned in February of 1942. On 22nd September 1943 HMNZS GAMBIA was commissioned for service with the Royal New Zealand Navy
